MYST is an early intervention youth mental health charity supporting the most vulnerable young people aged 12-24yrs in the Blue Mountains and beyond. We aim to improve the wellbeing of all young people in the community by providing relevant, dynamic, and engaging programs that empower young people to grow emotionally, physically, and intellectually so they build community connections, resilience and self-belief to help overcome life’s challenges and grow up with prospects not problems. We operate two youth Centres in Springwood and Katoomba that provide a safe space for young people to engage with peers and seek the help they need.
The demand for our services is acute and growing each day. Mental health disorders are experienced by around one in seven young people in Australia. and young people in the Blue Mountains are suffering more than most . The need for our service is acute and growing each day We have seen a dramatic increase in the number of referrals to our service over the last two years and we currently have a wait list for our Case Management and Counselling services for those young people with more complex mental health issues. We have also had to increase other programs such as breakfast club within the schools serving over 6,000 breakfasts before school over the last 12 months. This is mainly due to the impact of the devastating Bushfires and several flood and major storm events that ravaged the area in early 2020 followed COVID. In addition, the rise in the cost of living is also seeing families and young people really continue to struggle in the community.
