The Dogs’ Homes of Tasmania (DHoT) is Tasmania’s largest canine welfare organisation caring for Tasmanian dogs in need for more than 70 years.
As a not-for-profit that receives no regular government funding, we rely heavily on the charity of the Tasmanian dog-loving community to keep us running?—they have kept us afloat for 73 years now!
DHoT cares for approximately 3,000 lost, abandoned and surrendered dogs each year, through the operations of four Homes across Tasmania: Launceston, Burnie, Devonport and Hobart.
In addition to our core business above, DHoT:
• manages a large network of foster carers that offer in-home support medical or behavioural assistance before they can be offered for adoption
• operates pound facilities for surrounding councils
• represents the interests of dogs and their owners through active lobbying, campaigning, education and influence
• conducts full veterinary services
• provides temporary crisis care for dogs whose owners have been taken to hospital due to an emergency
• supports other animal welfare organisations with their excess demand, providing dogs a warm, safe bed eg. RSPCA
• runs a program with Tasmania Prison Service in which minimum security prisoners work with a Behaviour Trainer—providing a home for dogs that otherwise could not be re-homed.
