The Murrindindi Ranges Wildlife Shelter Inc (MRWS) is an independent not-for-profit organisation, authorised by the Department of Environment, Land, Water and Planning in the state of Victoria. It is a 100% volunteer service. The Shelter cares for and attends to hundreds of animals each year and, whenever possible, assists other shelters.
The MRWS is one of the biggest and busiest wildlife rehabilitation centres in the state of Victoria. They specialise in injured animals as well as taking orphans. Their lead operator Kate is a veterinary technician who works closely with several vets and has vet students undertake placement at the shelter. Many vet students are keen to help at the shelter once they’re qualified. Vets in the area also donate their time to assist the animals at the Shelter. The purchase of the essential equipment listed below will enable skilled volunteers (veterinarians) to easily assist animals at the shelter as they will have access to equipment they need to treat the animals away from their veterinary surgeries.
The Shelter needs a few key pieces of expensive equipment to improve their level of care for their patients:
- A portable x-ray machine will enable rescuers to be more effective and efficient in the diagnoses and care of their patients.
- An oxygen concentrator and anaesthetic machine would be utilised by visiting vets to treat patients.
- Some rubber matting for the stables. This will improve traction as well as comfort for the animals in their care.
